Turning Over a New Leaf…

…Or Not.
A little bit of history about yours truly. Back when I was in high school I used to work in the floral department at my local grocery store. My boss, or rather mentor as I prefer to call her, taught me a lot about plants, making flower arrangements, etc. This is where I learned to love daisies. While most people are huge fans of the Gerbera daisy, I actually prefer Shasta daisies. An annoying weed to some but to me they are beautiful. I used to like to make arrangements with a bunch of Shasta daisies with a couple of bright colored Gerbera daisies thrown in the mix.
This is also where I fell in love with the Bromeliad plant. The Bromeliad plant features exotic looking foliage with colors varying from marbled green, red-striped, greenish gray and more. On most varieties a flower stalk rises from the center of the plant. I found it to be unique in the fact that the flower was more like a plant in regard to the thickness of the flower skin (for lack of a better word). Interestingly, the pineapple fruit is actually from the Bromeliad species.
Flash forward to 2010 I was browsing my local HEB when I came across a table of Bromeliads with brightly colored blooms on sale! I gave up on taking care of plants years ago as everything I touched died, but for some reason I was inspired to try again. I brought it home and a couple of days later I had gnats all over my kitchen. Unfortunately, it appeared that I picked them up with the plant. After days of trying to get rid of them, they were finally gone and somewhere in between re-potted the plant. Less than a month later it was dead.
So what was once a vibrant, brightly colored orange bloom was now just another dead plant for me to dispose of. But being that money is tight and I feel up to a challenge, I’ve decided to try to bring it back to life! I’ve been doing some research on how to make everything all better. Hopefully I can get the green thumb I had as a teenager back again!
